LPMG Workshop with Clive Nichols
Since the weather is too bad for the Colchester meetup, I went to the workshop organised by LPMG held in West Grove Church in London (close to Portobello). It was a very well organised event, I actually learnt a trick or two. Results of such will depend whether someone get me to wake up very early in the morning without them being bitten, beaten or bodily harmed
because I am such a grumpy person if I don’t want to wake up early.

The workshop consisted of several parts but I am going to mention only two, and these are Ben Lovejoy‘s studio photography introduction and Clive Nichol’s garden photography talk.
The half an hour by Ben Lovejoy is very informative, I’ve recorded it (well, most of it until the memory of my camera is full) for reference in the future
. There are many studio lighting diagrams I’ve favourited on flickr but sometimes an illustration followed by a sample photo and an explaination gets the message across specially if you are saturated with information.

Award winning garden photographer, Clive Nichols presented an informative talk on garden photography while showing photographs and explaining how it was shot from type of lens to time of day. It was good to hear it from a professional since I was never sure what to do and when best to do it. One thing his talk is making me do is buying a new lens. I am not sure if Olympus will have a 100+mm macro lens for my Olympus – E-3 soon but I saw that Sigma have AF 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM Apo Macro Lens for Olympus 4/3 Mount
for £441. I shall be researching on that lens to see the results. The other thing Clive Nichols mentioned is you will get much better garden photographs if taken at dawn/very early morning or dusk. I agree because I can see the stunning photos he took in his image libraries and printed books. Am just not a morning person… well, I think I can manage if I have a very good incentive to do it. My young bones aren’t used to the English weather yet.
To see Clive Nichols’ work, one of his books The Art of Flower and Garden Photography is full of stunning photographs with details on lens, ISO, exposure and aperture. A good read and very inspiring.
